豊島学院高校 第一期 / Toshima Gakuin High School, phase1

70年の伝統をもつ高等学校の老朽化した校舎の全面的な建替え計画のため、キャンパス委員会を設置し、まず豊昭学園全体(豊島学院高校、昭和鉄道高校、東京交通短期大学)のマスタープランを描きました。教育環境における豊かさを再生する方向のひとつとして、教育の場を都市に対して積極的に開いてゆくこと、都市環境の持つ広がりや多様性を取り込み、安全と防犯に留意しながら都市と融合することで教育空間を活性化してゆくことが本校キャンパス委員会で議論されてきました。東京都心の池袋本町という都市的居住環境が周囲に広がる本校では、都会の先進性や利便性を日々体感できるとともに、人が寄りそって「住む」ということ、「生活する」ということを身近に感じられる環境に恵まれています。こうした周辺環境を積極的に活用し、都市へ視覚的に連続し、空間の共有を通して広がりや一体感を感じられるキャンパスづくりが求められました。マスタープランに基づき、第1期工事では、限られた敷地を有効に活用するため、グラウンド上空に門型に校舎が跨がるジャイアントゲート(シンボリックな大スパン構造)とし、地下には大講堂(トップライトから自然採光)、ジャイアントゲート部分には普通教室が集約され、3、4階吹抜けのスカイ・パティオ(空中の中庭)は光と風を身近に感じることができる生徒たちの生活空間の中心となっています。そして屋上の木製デッキの快適な広場からは都心の風景が一望できます。

In the reconstructing program of Hosho-Gakuen (Toshima Gakuin High School, Showa Tetsudo High School and Tokyo College of Transport Studies), educational foundation located at a residential area near the center of Tokyo, we started with working out the master plan of new school complex. The school committee discussed the means of redevelopment and refreshment of the richness of school environment. They suggested opening the campus to the city, taking in urban atmosphere and diversity, and merging the school into the city while maintaining the security and the safety. The school is located at an urban residential district of Ikebukuro-hon-machi, Tokyo, where you can enjoy the convenience and the accessibility of the downtown as well as feel the local atmosphere where people “nestle” and “live” together. The project required a campus design as a linkage to the urban surroundings with visual terms which produces a sense of belonging.In the first phase of construction, a gate-form building was constructed: “Giant Gate” hanging across the schoolyard is a symbolic large span which shelters the schoolyard for rainy weather, while the grand auditorium is located underground where the natural lighting comes from the top ceiling. This “Giant Gate” accommodates classrooms. An open-air courtyard “Sky-Patio” through the 3rd to the 4th floor forms a center of students’ life where they can enjoy light and wind closely. You can overlook a panoramic view of the downtown area of Tokyo from the wooden deck at the comfortable roof terrace.
